Shayla's Advocacy to Housing in Lexington

Shayla addresses housing stability and reduces homelessness in Lexington by securing funding for eviction mediation and emergency financial assistance, while advocating for policies like income-based protections for renters and the regulation of recovery residences. Additionally, she actively engages in housing initiatives through the following:

  • Ban on discrimination for source of income for renters

  • Successfully put forth a recommendation to establish a Tenant Advisory Group and a Landlord Advisory Group to provide feedback to the Housing Advocacy and Community Development Department

  • Lexington Habitat for Humanity Board of Directors

  • Participated as a volunteer in LexCount several years

  • Supported the inclusion of affordable housing in our expansion areas

  • Secured funding to extend contracts with KY Equal Justice Center and Legal Aid and Housing Authority for eviction mediation and intervention and for housing Emergency Financial Assistance program which helped 85 households in the 2nd District

  • Appointed Vice-Chair of the General Government and Planning standing Council Committee

  • Worked in partnership with the Division of Code Enforcement to develop and implement division-wide best practices. Successfully advocated for additional staff and technology for the Division of Code Enforcement

  • Passed regulations for Recovery Residences operating in residential areas

  • Serve on the Vacant Property Review Board

  • Successfully advocated for personnel to handle homeless encampments
